Meet our new family member!

I drove past this fan palm today and couldn't resist rescuing him from his position on the sidewalk outside a florist and took him home with me.  It was quite some feat getting him into the car, but with him peering over my shoulder as we drove home, I felt quite pleased with myself.

going to have to move that picture.  Oh and get a proper plant pot!

Isn't he gorgeous??

He needs a name!  (yes I name all our indoor plants)...any ideas??

UPDATE:  Thank you for all your suggestions!  I'll copy my response below here:

Well I ran your suggestions by the fan palm.

He stayed perfectly still when I called him Pat. Ignoring me.

He also stayed perfectly still when I called him Lou but I detected a quiver... [the central heating may have had something to do with it having just come on at that very moment]

But when I called him Professional Lewis Carroll, Lou for short, he waved his graceful heads around in assent! [I choose to ignore the central heating now blowing full force]

So his full name is Professor Lewis Carroll to name him after Lewis Carroll (although his real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, did you know that??) after one of my favourite authors.

He just seems an intellectual kinda plant you know? :D Plus he looks like he kinda belongs in the land of the jabberwocky. Am I a bit wacky

And I didn't mention Frederick! There was assent there too! Not as much as there was for Professor Lewis. Goodness. Wonder what'll happen when the heating goes off.

  1. Loulu is Hawaiian for fan palm. That name sounds gorgeous for an equally gorgeous palm.

  3. Oh a big fan of the Fan Palm, we've lived in the tropics for many years & have been exposed to many varieties, Gold Palms are big in Australia!! I love the enormous 40' high ones, until their branches come crashing down like a plane has landed on your house!! I don't think you can beat the name Loulu - being Hawaiian it will only make you think of paradise when you look at it, it's gorgeous!! Love Posie

  8. He is definitely a He! Very sculptural looking. His mate Harry the horsetail stands in the other corner and I imagine the conversations they are having!

  9. Hmm, do you think maybe you need to see someone about this? OK, I talk to plants but I don't name them!! :)

  10. I think he is lovely. Lou (short for Loulu) sounds more masculine. ;) Harry and Lou kind of works, too. Or if you wanted a name that starts with an F my Grandfather's name was Frederick.

  11. Oh, also, my granddad was a naturalist and would not mind in the least, if a plant is named after him. He loved the bush, and animals and plants!

  12. I am always being tempted by plants in a window, on a shelf, or on a table. Your pick is very pretty...looking forward to the name.

  13. How about Pat the Palm?! Its a bit daggy and not creative and totally unrelated to his tropical elegance but I think thats a bit of the Aussie oxymoron - you know, calling a read head 'Blue' etc...

  16. He's a bit of a show-off isn't he? "Look at me, look at me, I've got multiple fans and look at all my beautiful palm fingers fanning out in every direction!". His name suits him very much.

And PS, i posted some pics of my 'girls' as requested :-)
