Mystery Layer Found at Cluckingham Palace, Maple Cottage

Look who I found laying her little white eggs  :)

It solves that mystery then!  I also found Hypatia laying her nice brown eggs  :)

The quiet pleasure of hanging out with the chooks has helped alleviate some of the angst I'm currently experiencing with a gloating Irish husband after the rugby loss last night.  Sigh.

I've found our first artichoke!  Tremendously exciting but really, given the enormity of the leaves and scarcity of vegie growing space, I'm not sure that I'll grow them again!  I've also been finding that the leaves are hiding little baby snails...

We have had beautiful brekkies at the boathouse and also at the Collingwood Children's Farm this weekend, a favourite haunt.  I really really want to get some ducks but Mr Bok is yet to be convinced...

They can't be that messy can they?

  1. Well hello, Mrs. Bok. Your hens look like they are doing quite well, and even laying eggs. If you stop by the Garden Spot, you will see my tiny little white egg. Tell me if it is as small as the one that you posted a while back. How do you measure an egg anyway? As for ducks being messy? Our cousin had a duck in his backyard for years. I think my dad had one that hung out with the dog and ate dog food. As for the fowl in your photo, those are geese. Geese are very aggressive and mean. Ducks have a sweeter nature.

  2. Thanks Ann. I was rather taken with the little white duck next to the geese, but if that's a goose then I'm really a goose too! The geese were very funny although a bit scary but the white duck - or goose now that you've let me know how silly I was LOL - was so adorable! Your egg really is little!

  3. Nice to see your chookies are happily laying eggs. My dad's chooks are laying like mad at the moment.
As for ducks, for memory their poops can be rather messy?
Enjoy the rest of your weekend x

  4. Hi Mrs Bok. Depends on the sort of ducks. My silver appleyards were great (sob sob) and now I've got muscovys which are very messy (plus I've too many). If you have the space, you'd looooove them!

  5. We had a Cayuga duck for a while, but the noise was too much. She quacked continuously. Ended up relocating her to a nature sanctuary to save our sanity.

  6. Love your hens and their house. :) It's good to know you solved your egg laying mystery, too. Hypatia is such a cute little thing! I don't know a lot about ducks or how messy they are, but I do know they eat snails like nothing else!

  7. I'm not sure about ducks but they sound like a wonderful idea! They lay the most wonderful eggs for baking :) And I love the idea of getting a teacup pig but Mr NQN won't let me unless I tell him how I will house train them. I've heard they are very smart though so perhaps they could be house trained! :)

  8. Hallo! I'd never heard of the silver appleyards, I was thinking indian runner or muscovy as well. But the runny pooey mess...Mr Bok is definitely not keen on that!
Lorraine, a teacup pig would be adorable! And as my daughter likes to point out every time I tell her that her room is a pigsty, pigs are actually very clean animals!

  9. Please get ducks! Then I can live vicariously through you :) Besides, you deserve some consolation to make up for the rugby gloating...

I'm glad the egg mystery is solved, too!

  13. Aw, it's lovely hanging out with the chooks isn't it. You solved the mystery too! You've a beautiful chook house.
I love those piglets - they're so cute.
There's a couple of ducks who live a couple of houses down from us. It's a quiet neighbourhood, and every now and then they have a little wander up to our frontyard and peck away at the grass. I enjoy their visits, they're lovely ... pooey, but lovely :D)

  17. Ha! Mr Bok was reading these comments with some glee (whilst humming Irish victory songs). I know that ducks are messy but...I'd still love some! I'm sure our neighbours who have a pool would have something to say about that though! :)

  18. Love the pics, well done in solving the egg laying mystery. I think it's funny how involved we get with our eggs, I can even tell the layer by the shape of the eggs, pretty sad. I love the pics of the piggys and sorry to say that I'm with your hubby about the ducks, they are messy. But the are wonderful pets, I would love to keep some also. Finally just on the artichoke, I am still waiting for our 'globes' but wanted to share that if you remove the leaves from the base (they just snap off) as they grow, you get more flowers and they take up less space. If you try again, give it a go.Take care from Yollie

  19. ... sorry, I should have put, 'some of the leaves' I didn't mean all of them, just some as it is growing. ;o)

  20. Hope you can get some duck. Duck is very clever. Once in my parents place there was a big flood. A few days later one of our unnoticed missing duck because of the flood was waiting in front of our gate house to come back home again.

  21. I'm so glad they are putting a smile on your face Mrs B. Its tough at times like this! hehe

She's young to be laying now isn't she?

  22. Ooo an artichoke! How long did it take before it appeared? And how big did the plants get?

    It looks wonderful :)

  24. Looveerly post, Mrs Bok! Who needs to be in the country when suburbia can be so glorious? :)

Ducks...ah, let me tell you a story about them. My cousin bought two female Muscovy ducks. Only they weren't both female. Then they laid 23 eggs. And his three daughters wanted to let them hatch. A few months later, he had 25 very noisy, VERY stinky fully grown ducks in his backyard. He finally had to get rid of them when the neighbours started complaining about the smell. BUT, they had to go to good homes, because (sigh)..the girls had named them all.. :)
