I've been in a mild state of panic. Grey-ce or Little Grey as we call her, has been missing. No feathers in the backyard and normal behaviour from the other hens so we didn't think it was a fox...
Dusk was falling and still no sign of Little Grey. So we all went looking for her.
Now I didn't think hens laid eggs in Winter but guess I was wrong! Found her hiding, sitting broodily on a clutch of 9 eggs!
Eggcellent! We found her! Was so relieved! She was really NOT very pleased to be moved and her eggs taken away (and binned - no idea how long they'd been there) and she really did chase me about the yard in the near dark, telling me off in a very loud squawky voice. Look at her, beak open as she is still going on at me about the whole affair.
Someone told me that golden podded peas are actually peas and not meant to be eaten as snow peas...so I'll leave these on the vine and see if they fatten up...? I've been picking and eating them as snow peas!
Thanks for the laugh with your hen story, really needed it after a bad day (Melbourne airport closed, just as we need to fly to a family funeral). Keep the laughs coming I say
ReplyDeleteHuge hugs mrs gardenbliss. Thinking of you and hoping you get a flight soon xo
ReplyDeleteHa ha she dont like you for the moment :-)
ReplyDeleteMaybe she will forgive you laiter!
Hugs from me!
Oh dear she must be really annoyed! Don't know when she will forgive you :P.
ReplyDeleteGood news! What kind of chicken is she? She's very pretty, and I'm in research mode.
ReplyDeleteAh I wonder if your golden podded peas will be golden peas on the inside too?!
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to come by and say Thank you so much for your encouraging and kind comment on my blog recently. Really means a lot. Thank you.
You also made me smile re the Stacy (South Wales) and Gavin (Essex) reference :)
Kindest of wishes.
You could have ended up with lots of little chicks running around. I enjoyed reading Saturday's post and seeing your veg... it's tough competing with nature's insects! I'm in the same boat - feels like a sinking boat at times :)
ReplyDeleteHi Helena and Diana! She is still cross with me this morning!!
ReplyDeleteHeart in Asia, she is a grey laced Wyandotte. A great layer too!
Hi Shaheen, I love that show :) and I really enjoy reading your blog. Hope it gets more summery for you though!
Hi Kelli, it's disheartening isn't it!!
I'm glad you found her! Looks like she'd found herself a lovely warm spot next to the hot water tank! Poor darlin', she must have been seriously pissed.. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh, poor thing, she was getting ready for a rather large family, wasn't she!
ReplyDeleteNine eggs?! I remember we had a few broody hens a while back and kept finding little clutches of eggs all over the backyard. Then we found a red belly black snake in the backyard and thought it was probably too much encouragement for him. Probably a bit of hide and seek for the snake!
ReplyDeleteso happy you found Grey-ce!! i love the shots of her... it looks like she's on the lamb :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a relief for you - even if an irritating experience for her :) Nine eggs is pretty impressive, it's a pity you weren't able to find them fresh and put them to good use!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, Wyandotte, thank you! Will short-list I think :)
ReplyDeleteAnother happy ending, especially with Mr. Fox on the prowl at the neighbors.
ReplyDeleteWhat a champion! 9 eggs! Was she there overnight?
ReplyDeleteI think someone in my flock is hoarding too! Altough not missing... I should be getting more eggs than I am!
Grey-ce laid her egg in the henhouse this morning (phew) but is definitely glaring at me at every opportunity!!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness they mystery was solved and it was not a fox!!!! I know the glare of a hen all too well when you take their beloved eggs away, Tink is the "Master" of holding a grudge too. Not sure if you got me comment re keeping foxes away? Let me know what you think, have a wonderful week, from Yollie
ReplyDeleteHi Yollie, you made me laugh so much! Told Mr Bok, don't think I'll catch him peeing on the fence but it's worth a try! LOL
ReplyDeleteOh she'll be cranky at you!!! Taking away her chance of Motherhood....but I'm sure she'll be happy she wont have to sit out there in the cold anymore either! :) Your peas look great, I can never wait for them to mature either. They taste so good picked young and fresh! ENJOY!
ReplyDeleteahhh, your post made me giggle. We have three chookies with very similar personalities.
ReplyDeleteI am new to your blog and so very glad I stopped by.
Kellie xoxox
Great story! I was relieved to read that she was safe. I can imagine how mad she was at you for spoiling her perfect broody spot! If the peas taste good as snow peas--then go ahead and eat them as such :)
ReplyDeleteJust came across your lovely blog! I grew golden-podded peas one year and found the pods were a bit stringy and the peas were a bit bland. I personally decided they were more for looking at than eating but maybe you'll have better luck!
